Crappy week but getting better

Well the week started out great!
Monday we did WMP, I had my second practice round on invertebrates, it went well so next EMP I will start taking real data. It was a great dive, I had Ploy as a buddy and she's a wonderful buddy.
The dive went and felt really good.
In the evening I had a Skype-call with mum and dad which I really enjoyed. Hopefully next time I can have the web-cam on.

But after Monday it went downhill :)

Tuesday morning I woke up feeling very tired and had an irritating cough. Went to the dive school but after a few hours there I realised I was not in the right form to go diving and went back to my hotel were I fell asleep. Then I slept Wednesday and Thursday too, apart from a few hours when I drank water and had "Noodle in a cup". Had a fever of around 38,5 for three days straight, this morning my body had finally stopped aching and my fever had gone down. Still have a little bit of a fever but I just couldn't stay in my bed and room any longer, I was so bored so I went over to the dive school. Of course no diving for me, I have both a fever and a nasty cough, and OF COURSE they went muck diving today, my favorite, I bet they're gonna see seahorses now when I'm not there.
I have been on land filling up the needles we use for attaching corals with string. Now all the needles are full :) I wanted to at least do something useful after missing out on all the work for the past three days.
I haven't been this sick for this long since I can't remember, I guess my body hasn't built up any immunity to the Koh Tao bugs yet. The thing I have is what is going around here, several in the team has had it or is starting to get it.

Tomorrow we are all working again with the Koh Tao School fundraising. We start at 16 and work the whole evening selling cotton candy. I'm gonna be there to help out, but will take it real easy.
I want to be well when next week start so I can go diving with the team and do some work.

Keep your fingers crossed that I will be well enough to go diving on Monday!

This weeks fun and relaxation

We had a little party at Babalo Bar Wednesday for a job well done with the class from Bangkok.
Thursday I took a walk together with a few others to Buddha Viewpoint, it's a pretty tough walk but the view is fantastic, after that we went to dinner at Carabou, there I enjoyed a Kiwi frappe which I don't think had even the slightest hint of kiwi in it, tasted like "päronsplitt" :)

I got myself another fan for my room which is really nice. Now I get it pretty nice and cool in the evenings.

Wednesday I got my room cleaned and new sheets, and of course I managed to drop my whole fried rice together with a bottle of chili sauce on the floor, spent about an hour cleaning that up. So much for my planned DVD-evening with fried rice :)
I've been dropping things all over this week :)

Tonight is the ice-hockey OS-final, Swe-Can, we'll be going somewhere to watch it tonight. GOOOO SWEDEN!!!

Tomorrow I'm finally managed to schedule a Skype-call with my mum and dad. With a bit of luck the WIFI-will be strong so we can video-Skype. Unfortunately I don't think mum and dad has web-cam installed on their computer so I wont get to see my darling Terry :)

This week has been really busy and I haven't had a full weekend off for two weeks, so I'm a bit behind in my marine biology studies.
Havn't started jogging in the mornings or doing strength excersise yet, but hopefully the coming week will be a bit less full.

This weeks conservation

It's been a hactic week with the International School of Bangkok being here until Wednesday.
That meant serving breakfast, packing their gear and other extra duties.

We did get some conservation work done to, both on land and in the ocean.

Monday we went out in Chalok Bay together with the kids to deplay the structures we built and plant corals on to them.
My team was responsible for getting the coral ropes from the coral collector we installed last week, it was pretty hard work carrying the ropes to the site where the structures were and it took some time for us to both find the coral collector and then the site were the structures were.
But we finally managed to get everything there.
For me it wasn't one of my better diving work, first I managed to pop up to the surface by filling the BCD to much and then I did the opposite. We were very shallow though so there were no real danger, just frustrating.

Tuesday we went to Twins and Bouyancy World to plant corals with epoxy, all went really good and we worked fast and efficient. Just when we've finished we saw a sea snake which we followed around for a while, it was beautiful! We all had air left so we dove around for a while before getting back on the boat.

Wednesday we went to Shark Bay to do a shark survey, this is done snorkelling. We saw a lot of blacktip reef sharks, they were beautiful.
In the afternoon we went to Save Koh Tao office to clean up before the buoy- and mooring line workshop on Thursday.
After I left my BCD to a seamstress to repair a small rupture in the fabric. It's a travel BCD so the fabric is pretty thin with integrated weight pockets. I don't think Cressi thought that one through properly when constructing that BCD. The weight from the pockets when you have weights in them is to much for the fabric to handle.
I've now started using a weight belt ínstead.

Thursday was the workshop, several dive schools attended so after the lecture we all got down to work. Many hands made easy work and we were done by lunch time already. We were all pretty tired after being out in the sun.
After our team went to lunch together, and after I got my repaired BCD.

Friday back in the water :) The plan was to find a good location for installing a new mooring line in Tai Tong. On our way there we saw a fish trap floating on the surface which we retrieved.
One team went down to find a suitable rock, but had to abort that when they found a huge net covering an area of corals.
The whole team went down equipped with scissors, bags and rope to remove the net. It was a difficult task, you have to be very careful when removing the net so you don't put additional stress on the corals and whatever live organisms that are trapped in the net.
After a job well done we went back to Chalok Bay and repaired one buoy and installed a new one. I snorkelled out to where the new mooring line where (was a bit of a swim) with a knife to cut the rope.
When we were back in the dive shop we cleaned up and transformed the fish cage to a beach garbage bin :) So something that was before evil is now doing good :)

Yesterday was land- and underwater clean-up day.
First we cleaned the beach and road in Chalok. After that we went to Sairee for the underwater clean-up.
Was a fantastic dive, I practiced a lot on body control and buoyancy while collection trash from the bottom.
Totally we collected 11 kg's of trash.

This old lady is exhausted

Today we helped the school from International School Bangkok to make three structures. One I, one S and one B.
I was on team S, bending thick steel wires to the shape on an S is really hard work, I think my body will by hurting tomorrow :) In my opinion, even though we had the hardest letter, our was the best. It really had the right S-curves.
Over the S there were arcs and then one steel wire shaped like an S on top.
I hope I can share a picture of it tomorrow.

All of the letters we made will tomorrow be lowered to the bottom in one place at Chalok Bay. On the letters corals will be attached to create a new artificial reef.
We will do this together with the class, there will be divers, free divers and snorklers.
I don't think the structures will be that deep, so hopefully I can bring my camera and take pictures of our work. I don't want to start using my housing for the camera yet, I need to be a better skilled dover first.

It's been a hot, very very swety and hard working day, but it has also been interesting and a good learing experience.
I will also be taught how to weld later on in my internship :)

It's really fun to be part of not only constructing the structures, but also be there to lower it in the ocean and attach corals to it :)

Now I'm tired, hot and dirty.

After all was done with the structures I bought an extra fan for my room.

Now I'm just relaxing on my balcony.

Oh an "interesting thing happened early this morning around 4 o'clock. There was knocking on my door and on the other doors on my floor. I thought something was wrong so I opened my door.. and there was this thai-lady saying she's lost her boyfriend :) she even looked into my room to see if he was there... Talk about being jealous when you knock on strangers door at 4 in the morning to see if your boyfriend is there.. I can understand why her boyfriend went into hiding :)

About me, myself and I

The last 1,5 week I’ve gotten into the group better. There are some really nice and wonderful people, like Kaite and Alex from Australia (Aussie’s are so fantastic and kind), Evan from USA, Ploy from Thailand, Pim from Holland, Pau and Rahul and Karina.
It’s not the people’s fault that I spend most of my time alone, it’s just who I am and I think they understand that now.
The best time for me is when I come home after a full day of studies/work and sit down on my balcony with a book.
I’ve came with them a few times for dinner and party but mostly I go out by myself to eat or bring something with me.
There’s also Hilde who is helping me becoming a better diver.
I’m still adjusting to everything, diving, the heat, the social thing. Tomorrow I will bring out “work-me” cause we are building artificial reef structures with the school class from Bangkok, and then we will aid them on Monday and Tuesday. As an intern it’s important to show what we do and why we do it so that the importance of Marine Conservation is spread to the younger generation.
On Valentines we all went out to eat and we girls got roses from the owner of the restaurant J And I got a call from mum and dad J that made my day!
I miss talking to my mum, me and my dads walks, my sister and Terry. I’m very happy Cizzi and dad is coming for a visit, just wish my mum was coming too. But I understand why she can’t. We’ll just have to talk instead.
I also miss talking food with my work pal Lennart!
Food… I want pickeled salted cucumber, smoked pork loin, champagne, a proper pork chop…… and I also need contact lenses, I didn’t bring enough, but the ones I have will last til my dad gets here J
What I love is not having to use toilet paper, I want a hose next to my toilet at home.
And the food, depending on where you go you can get excellent food for a low price. Like the sandwich lady where you can get a big delicious sandwich for 60 Baht, or a local restaurant where you can get a good tasty thai meal for 100 Baht. There are more expensive places where the food is also yummy, like Koppee or pizza’s from Fishy’s.
I normally eat cheap but sometimes I let myself have a pizza or breakfast from Koppee.
I haven’t been to New Heaven Restaurant yet, but I think I will have to go there real soon to see if the food is as good as it was 2,5 years ago.
I we also have the Samosa-guy who comes by the dive shop and sells the most delicious samosas every made!! Only 20 Baht/piece!!
Tonight I’m going to Fishy’s to buy a pizza and bring home, I’ll be eating it and watching a movie and if I’m awake at 12 I hope I can listen to the hockey game. The likely hood of my being awake that late is very slim J
I’ve had rashes on my hand since I got here, but then I got the suggestion from Roxanna at the Dive shop to buy pure coconut oil and rub my hands with…. The rashes are almost gone!
My body is adjusting to the heat, and I think it will take a bit more time for me to get there.
The only place I got sunburned was my forehead, it’s pink
J But I’m being much more careful now.
The ocean is still a bit too cold for my liking, but at least I have my wetsuit.
I think I need plastic surgery when I get home, people are guessing my age almost correct, how depressing L Perhaps when my skin has adjusted to the heat I will look younger J
The funny thing with my Botox injections I took before I went here is that when I’ve been out diving the marks from the mask on my forehead takes a long long time to disappear (and for you who knows about diving, no I don’t have the mask too tight
J)
When I have gotten used to the diving and the schedule I will start jogging and doing some muscle training, it will be good for me and make me stronger. But right now just diving drains all my powers J

It hasn't rained since I got here, it's getting really dry. I'd just love a good rain and thunder storm.

There’s a full moon this weekend, it is so beautiful.

Party

On the 7th the volonteers and interns went out for a couple of drinks. We ended up in Babaloo Bar where some in the group tried the fire show tools. Some were good and some not so much, but no one got hurt J
It was a fun night

On the 11th we had a party at the dive shop for Pau’s birthday. It was really fun, but most of all Pau had the best birthday ever J and that’s the important thing.

My new home - Namhasin House

On the 9th I moved into my new home at Namhasin House.
It’s so nice to finally have a place of my own. First thing I did was buying cleaning products and buying yogurt, tomato juice, cheese, crackers, coffee, soy milk and muesli.

The room is very small and have only one small shelf to put clothes on, but I have managed to put everything in order without having to keep stuff on the floor or in my suitcases.
It’s also got a fridge, a bathroom with cold water.
It is a very nice room though, and the owners are so kind.
It gets pretty hot in my room, I only have a fan, but luckily I had brought my mosquito net from home, it is for beds normally but I have hung it on my curtain rod to the balcony so I can have the balcony door open at night without getting any mosquitos into my room.
It works very well.
I think I will have to get an extra fan though, cause it’s going to get much much hotter on Koh Tao.

Marine conservation

I don’t have any underwater pictures to share with you yet, I want to get better on diving before bringing my camera down with me.
On the 7th we went to Tanote Bay to maintain the reef-balls.
The reef balls are made of cement and half a sphere, there are holes in them to provide a place for fish and other organisms to seek protection and shelter from predators.
On top of the balls corals are either put in tubes already on the balls or glued on with epoxy. Imagine a glue working in water
J
We started out by collecting coral fragments which was then added to the corals already on the reef balls.
Then we had the weekend off
Monday the 10th of February we went to Aow Leuk to practice EMP (Ecological Monitoring Program). I first had a lecture on fish and what kind of species we were sampling data on and how to do the EMP survey.
After the lecture we went off to Aow Leuk.
It was a very nice dive, with good visibility and I managed to recognize some of the species we were looking for.
Feb 11th
First we had a lecture in BioRock technology, how it works and why corals on a BioRock is more resilient and grows faster.
After the lecture we went off to BioRock. I was assigned to do my favorite duty, cleaning up. Which in this case meant cutting of old strings from corals that had attached to the steel substrate by secreting calcium carbonate.
It was fantastic to see the growth on these structures.
Feb 12th
Today we prepared for a school class from an international school in Bangkok which is arriving this weekend.
They will learn about artificial reefs and marine conservation. They will also get to put corals to a nursery so we made the preparations for that.
First half of the group made a frame of PVC, while the other group (that I was on) took measures and checked the health of the Green Turtles in the dive shops turtle tanks.
We measure the length, check their weight and look for any health problems.
When they’ve reached a certain weight and length and are healthy, they are released.
After the PVC-frame was assembled we all went out to Chalok Bay to complete the coral “collector”. We collected big fragments and attached to ropes on the PVC frame.
Feb 13th
First I had an EMP-lecture on substrate.
After that the team went to Sairee to conduct the surveys, for me it was only a practice survey, the data I collected will not be used of course, first I need to get better.
It was a really shallow dive, only about 4 meters max, was a bit difficult staying in the right position but I managed to do OK on that survey. Chad was doing the same survey and he compared my sighting with his. I made a couple of wrong judgements, but overall I did ok.
I also put down the transect line for the survey.
Feb 14th
Today we first had a seahorse-lecture and after that we went off to Sai Tong to do what is called a muck dive. A muck dive is a dive you do where it’s only sand, silt or clay, organisms are that visible and abundant.
We went to about 17 metres, and it was really nice to do a deeper dive, it is so much easier keeping your buoyancy and positions when you don’t have the surge from the ocean and only weak currents.
The visibility sometimes was really really bad, you couldn’t even see your own fins. Luckily we had a V-shaped rope where each person had her/his position so no one got lost
J
We didn’t find any seahorses though, but overall it was a perfect Valentine’s dive.
The hardest part was getting on the boat
J The waves were pretty big and the boat wasn’t moored so you had to be quick getting up.

Things are good

Yesterday we went out the conservation team to fix a bouyline and do some coral restoration at one of the nursery sites.
With the bouyline I was in charge of the knife :) and cutting the rope at the surface. I was floating on the surface of the ocean, holding a knife :) I was happy
When that was done we all went down to repair one of the coral sites. I felt good and the diving went very well, still have a lot more to learn when it comes to diving, but the suggestions I got from Hilde really helped me. I really appreciate diving with experienced divers who tells me what I do wrong and how I should do it.

In the evening we went to Save Koh Tao meeting, all pictures are from the slides of Save Koh Tao, it belongs to them. Interesting about the sunlotion....

It was a very interesting meeting.

After the meeting some of us went for dinner, I had the basil leaves with Chicken, ate all the chilis... which I regretted today :) My tummy has been a bit upset with me today so I didn't go with the team diving. Instead I cleaned Chalok Beach and studied Marine Biology.

I also got a call from Namhasin House!!! They have a room for me and I'll be moving in on the 9th of February. The room is really really small, but clean and fresh. Cleaning of the room, new bedsheets and electricity is included, I also have a fridge! And most importantly the owners are really nice and friendly.
I will have to have my clothes in my suitcase, but I don't mind that, now I can make myself a home there.

There is one review on Tripadvisor that is really bad, says the owners are terrible, I fully DISAGREE, the lady and man is really helpful and friendly. Maybe the person giving that review wasn't very polite and nice to them, I don't know. With me they are really great.

Can't wait to move in.

Soon is time for me to go to dinner, I think I'll have something not so spicy today :) Even though I love the spice and heat.
